MCTP Supports Community Initiatives

CONECTS: The CONECTS collaborative has provided youth development and teen pregnancy prevention programs to teens and case management support to young mothers since 1985. The City of Rochester is the lead agency, and MCTP serves as a policy-making community board to the collaborative. The funding for this program is made available by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, through the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Services (APPS) program.

CONECTS subcontractors include Charles Settlement House, MCTP, PRYD, SPCC, Junior Achievement, and the YWCA. CONECTS agencies sponsor clubs that incorporate the Teen Outreach Program, and provide community service opportunities and a life skills curriculum. The YWCA provides case management to young mothers at Rochester City School District high schools and SPCC provides case management support to young mothers in out of school settings. All of these programs are designed to encourage young people to make healthy choices, to set goals for themselves, and to achieve their goals.

For more information, contact Ms. Charlie Crawl-King, CONECTS Coordinator, City of Rochester, at charliec@cityofrochester.gov.

In-Control: Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region is the lead agency for the In-Control collaborative. In-Control offers reproductive health care, community outreach and education. It also provides services to teen fathers. Funding is provided by the NYS Department of Health (Community Based Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program). In Control reaches 2,800 young people each year with health education and outreach; provides 700 reproductive health care visits to teens each year; and provides case management support to 50 young men.

In-Control partners include Baden Street Settlement and the Urban League of Rochester. For more information, contact Mr. LaMarr Powell, In-Control Project Supervisor, at lpowell@pprsr.org.

Family Talk is a communication workshop series for parents sponsored by the Family Resource Centers of Crestwood Children's Center and MCTP. The curriculum consists of five core workshops providing information, support and skill building; and is designed to help parents feel more confident and be more competent discussing sexuality and substance abuse prevention with their children. A Spanish language version of the curriculum has been developed, and the curriculum has also been adapted for teen parents. The workshops have been presented to parents in a variety of settings, including schools, churches, transitional housing programs, and at the Family Resource Center neighborhood sites.

For more information, contact Ms. Roseann Kraus, at 585-330-5372. See also the Parents as Primary Sexuality Educators, Curriculum Effectiveness Evaluation (PDF).

HEART Coalition: The HEART Coalition for a Drug-Free Rochester is led by the City of Rochester with the assistance of the Metro Council for Teen Potential and the Rochester City School District. The Coalition enlists community-based organizations and youth leaders to work together to promote mental health and to prevent, postpone and reduce the use of alcohol and marijuana. HEART works with parents, teachers and the larger community to increase the supports available to young people, to reduce youth access to alcohol and marijuana, to raise awareness about manipulative marketing practices, and to change community norms. Youth members chose the name HEART to reflect the coalition's aspirations for Rochester: Health, Excellence, Achievement, Responsibility and Truth.

Funding for the HEART Coalition is provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Office of National Drug Policy, as part of the Drug-Free Communities program. For more information, contact Sheila Driscoll at (585) 325-8130 x210, or Kristina Heiligenthaler at (585) 428-7371.

What's Next Curriculum Project: MCTP has developed a youth health curriculum, incorporating original dramatic video stories and interactive exercises. MCTP trains youth workers to present this interactive and skills-based curriculum as part of ongoing youth development programs. The Rochester City School District helped to create the curriculum, and uses it in middle and high school health classes. Rochester Community Television broadcasts the stories and related talk shows.
